Professional Biography

I received my BS in Biology from MIT in 1966 and my PhD in Biology from Brandeis University in 1971. I then joined Dr. Theodore Puck as a Post-Doctoral colleague in 1971 to study somatic cell genetics. In 1974 I received one of the earliest RO1 grants from the National Institute on Aging. I have made major contributions to the biology of aging related to metabolism. In 1974 I got interested in Down syndrome, the most common genetic cause of intellectual disability in humans and played many leadership roles in research on this condition, including coordinating the international effort to sequence the DNA of chromosome 21.
