How do you tell the story of storytellers?

How do you document a collaboration as dynamic and powerful as the Cocina Libre Project?

Students are teaming up to explore these questions with mentorship from Dr. Julia Roncoroni, Associate Professor of Counseling Psychology at Morgridge College of Education.

Through Cocina Libre, Dr. Roncoroni collaborates with immigrant partners, storytellers, culinary experts, and filmmakers to celebrate diversity and promote inclusivity through storytelling and food.

As the 2025 Signature Faculty and Student Award recipient, Dr. Roncoroni will mentor a student team working alongside community and university collaborators to amplify immigrant narratives and cultural traditions. Together, they will produce a podcast and a short documentary showcasing the Cocina Libre project.

The Signature Faculty and Student Program recognizes faculty with exceptional records of mentoring undergraduate signature work. The program supports their ability to guide collaborative, community-engaged projects that address complex issues meaningful to students and the public good. Central to this work is personalized, one-on-one mentoring.

Mentorship lies at the core of Dr. Roncoroni’s commitment to fostering collaboration and providing students with practical, hands-on experiences to help them grow and thrive. Through the Signature Faculty and Student Award, she will guide an interdisciplinary team as they apply their classroom knowledge to productions exploring the intersections of food, culture, and identity.

The Signature Faculty and Student Program is made possible with generous funding from the Arthur Vining Davis Foundations.
