Strengthening Community Engagement Through Social Media: Denver INC's Digital Outreach Initiative
Logan Schmid, CCESL Intern, University of Denver
Denver Inter-Neighborhood Cooperation (Denver INC) has long served as a bridge between Denver residents, neighborhood organizations, and local decision-makers. Recognizing the growing importance of digital communication, Denver INC partnered with University of Denver students through the Center for Community Engagement to advance a Social Media Project aimed at strengthening the organization's online presence and community outreach.
The primary goal of the project was to identify sustainable, effective ways for Denver INC to use social media to raise awareness of its mission, engage community members, and strengthen relationships with volunteers, donors, neighborhood leaders, and partner organizations. As more individuals rely on social media platforms for information about local issues and community events, improving Denver INC's digital visibility became an important opportunity to expand its impact throughout the Denver area.
Throughout the project, CCESL interns Logan Schmid and Caitlin Turk collaborated closely with Denver INC leadership to develop a strategic and consistent approach to content creation. Most planning meetings took place virtually, with additional in-person collaboration sessions focused on brainstorming content ideas and refining communication strategies. Regular check-ins with organizational leadership ensured that the project remained aligned with Denver INC's broader goals and priorities.
One of the most significant accomplishments of the project was the development of a structured social media posting schedule designed to create consistency and sustainability. The schedule included mission-focused and educational content at the beginning of each week, community stories and organizational spotlights in the middle of the week, and engagement-focused updates, event reminders, and community calls to action later in the week. This framework provides Denver INC with a long-term system that can continue to guide content creation well beyond the internship period.
In addition to developing the content strategy, the project produced several tangible communication products. These included social media posts highlighting the Weaver Awards, content promoting the documentary Join or Die, interview-based posts featuring organizational leadership, neighborhood-focused content, and story posts designed to maintain engagement during periods with fewer organizational updates. The project also established templates and content ideas that can be reused and adapted for future outreach efforts.
The benefits of the project extend beyond increased social media activity. By creating a more active and consistent online presence, Denver INC is better positioned to share information about community issues, promote civic participation, highlight neighborhood achievements, and connect residents with opportunities for engagement. Stronger digital outreach also helps ensure that important conversations about local issues reach a broader audience within Denver's diverse communities.
This project demonstrates how strategic communication can support community-building efforts and strengthen nonprofit organizations. Through collaboration between Denver INC and University of Denver students, the initiative created practical tools and systems that will continue to benefit the organization and the communities it serves.
