Media literacy Intervention in a Denver high school
By: David Coppini, Media, Film, Journalism Studies

The goal of this project was to pilot a one-week media literacy in a Denver high schools, develop models for education on media literacy. In January 2023, we thought a class at Crescent View academy that included general lectures, guest speaker sessions, field trips and hands on journalism exercises that had a production component. In order to complete the project, we partnered not only with the high school, but also with two community organizations such as Colorado Media Project and COLab, which helped us with guest speakers and field trips.
As we were able to see through the assignments and a pre and post class survey, students improved their ability to spot untrustworthy sources of information and misinformation.
This model used at Crescent View Academy will be used as a pilot that can potentially be given to other public schools around the state to reform media literacy lessons. The final goal of this project is not only to educate students at Crescent View Academy about the dangers of misinformation but to bring awareness to faults in media literacy to audiences across Colorado.
